Ils n’éludèrent donc pas celle de Virgile, exemplum de tout style, parfois plus virgiliens que le modèle qui les faisait naître à une originalité qu’ils définissaient pour les Modernes. In the Neapolitan Renaissance academy, Latin poets made imitation a principle of their writing—including the imitation of Virgil, the exemplum of all styles. Sometimes their imitations were more Virgilian than the model that gave birth to an originality that they defined for the Moderns.
