These famous holy places were only a few of literally thousands of European shrines, each attracting its 'own ' pilgrims. Pilgrimage accelerated with the pace of life until it was ingrained tradition by the twelfth century, and it remains one of the hallmarks of the Middle Ages, like the fairs of Champagne, the Bayeaux Tapestry, the Quest for the Grail, the Black Prince.
