| Description: | Im Rahmen des Projektes »Weltweites Zellwerk« wurde eine Gürtelschnalle aus Burwell untersucht. Als Ergänzung zu den Granatanalysen, deren Veröffentlichung noch aussteht, wird hier vor allem die Ikonographie eines zoomorphen Elements besprochen, mit dem die Schnalle verziert ist. Dabei handelt es sich um ein doppelköpfiges Tier mit Schlangenkörper und Vogelköpfen. Das Motiv ist im frühen Mittelalter populär, obwohl Vorläufer des Motivs ihren Ursprung bereits in der Antike haben. Ein zeitgleiches Vergleichsstück stellt ein interessantes Bindeglied dar, das die Schnalle aus Burwell mit der Bildersprache des vendelzeitlichen Schweden in Verbindung bringt. Im Rahmen stilistischer Vergleiche wird dargelegt, dass es sich bei dem Motiv auf der Gürtelschnalle von Burwell vermutlich um ein verkürztes Bildmotiv, ein Chiffre, handelt. Dieses gehört zu einer Bildformel, die für das 7. Jahrhundert vor allem für den nordwestlichen Teil Europas sehr häufig belegt ist. ; A belt buckle from Burwell was analysed within the scope of the project »International Framework«. Additional to the garnet analyses (to be published) the iconography of one zoomorphic element which decorates the buckle shall be discussed here. It is a double-headed animal with the body of a snake and birds‘ heads. Although this motif was popular in the Early Middle Ages the origin of its predecessors goes back to antiquity. A contemporary comparison is interesting as it links the buckle from Burwell with the iconography of Vendel period Sweden. The stylistic comparison suggests that the motif of the Burwell buckle is an abridged motif, a cypher. It belongs to a pictorial cypher which is documented numerously in the north-western parts of 7th century Europe. ; Dans le cadre du projet »Weltweites Zellwerk« une boucle de ceinture en provenance de Burwell a fait l’objet d’analyses. C’est quasiment en complément des analyses des grenats, dont la publication est en cours, que le présent article traite de l’iconographie d’un élément de décor zoomorphe qui décore la pièce. Il s’agit d’un animal à deux têtes d’oiseau avec un corps de serpent. Ce motif est populaire au Moyen Age, bien qu’il trouve son origine dans l’Antiquité. Un élément de comparaison intéressant crée un trait d’union expliquant un lien stylistique entre la boucle de Burwell et celle Suède datée de l’âge de Vendel. En poussant ces comparaisons stylistiques il est proposé que le motif sur la boucle de ceinture de Burwell correspond probablement à un décor simplifié, un chiffre. Celui-ci correspond à des représentations surtout attestées au 7e siècle pour le Nord-Ouest de l’Europe. |
