Title: Die mittelalterliche illuminierte Handschrift Factorum ac dictorum memorabilium libri IX des Valerius Maximus (BSB Clm 21224)
Author: Matějová, Judita
Description: The article focuses on one of the Latin manuscripts of bohemical provenance of the Roman historian Valerius Maximus. Valerius's work was in the Middle Ages, especially in the 14th century, widely copied and some of the copies are located also in the Czech and the Moravian libraries and archives. The manuscripts originated in 14th and 15th century in unspecified workshops and represent only the transcripts without significant illuminated decorations. An exception is the manuscript, now in the Bavarian State Library in Munich (Clm 21224), which according to experts, originated in the typing and illuminators Johánek's from Střílky workshop. This workshop has worked 1385‒1400 in Olomouc for the contracting ecclesiastical authorithies and the likely range of humanistic scholars from around Jošt Lucemburský. The manuscript is dated to 1385, and includes complete nine books of the Valerius' work. In his conclusion is credited a short letter Epistola Valerii ad Rufinum, which was in the Middle Ages often accompanied by copies of the Valerius' works. The Munich manuscript occupies an important place in the collection of bohemical manuscripts of Valerius Maximus mainly to determinate its origine and belonging to his client early leaders of humanism in the Czech lands.
