| Beschreibung: | This article examines German research papers on medieval Poland published between 1918 and 1970 with regard to the most important subject areas. In the field of political history, particular attention was paid both to the genesis of the Polish State in the 10th Century and to aspects of the German-Polish relationship in the high Middle Ages. The focus of economic and social history was mainly on the history of settlement (Ostsiedlung); here, the interdisciplinary concept of the Ostforschung (history, geography, ethnology) was applied to the most considerable degree. Apart from continuing its older research on Poznan, municipal history also produced studies on medieval Cracow. Research papers in the field of church history were primarily concerned with the establishment of the Polish church Organization in the l0th and 11th centuries. In the early 1940s, Cracow was also the main object of research in art history. Some authors of these publications were university teachers; more important, however, are those who either worked for research institutions devoted to the Ostforschung or were associated with the Poznan Historical Society (Posener Historische Gesellschaft). Of the eleven academic studies examined here only few clearly made use of the paradigmatic concept of the Ostforschung with its Germany-centred approach. Continuity and inspiration for further research can rather be attributed to those which were not committed to the Ostforschung in the narrow sense. |
