Beschreibung: | In peacemaking in the former Ottoman Empire, a discrepancy developed between the discursive power of the Paris Peace Conference to make treaties, and the material power to determine the situation on the ground. In the Arabic-speaking lands, the Great Powers papered over this situation with League of Nations Mandates. These raised as many questions as they answered. In Anatolia, Mustafa Kemal’s emerging ethno-nationalist state sharply demarcated the power of the Allies to make peace. Yet the discursive power of the Conference did not entirely disappear, as post-Ottoman Turkey sought to join the new international system on terms it considered acceptable. |
