| Description | L’architecture française a la réputation d’avoir toujours privilégié la mise en œuvre de matériaux laissés dans leur état naturel. Or, une observation plus détaillée des monuments fait apparaître que, dès leur construction, les façades et toitures de la Renaissance et de l’époque classique firent souvent l’objet de finitions peintes qui leur donnaient l’aspect réellement souhaité par leurs maîtres d’œuvre. Cette redécouverte amène une véritable relecture de certains des monuments français les plus célèbres. Elle impose aussi une réinterprétation du rôle donné jadis à la peinture, non plus comme amoindrissement mais comme valorisation de l’architecture. French architecture has the reputation of always having favoured the use of materials left in their natural state. However, closer examination of monuments reveals that the facades and roofs of the Renaissance and classical periods were often painted upon construction, to give them the appearance required by their commissioner. This rediscovery has shed new light on some of the most famous French monuments. It demands a re-examination of the role formerly ascribed to painted finishes, no longer as a form of diminishment but as a way of enhancing the architecture. | - |
