Title: “Hebraika” und “Ioudaika” in mittelalterlichen biblischen Handschriften
Contributor: Kraus, Wolfgang
Kreuzer, Siegfried
Author: Fincati, Mariachiara
Description: Some byzantine manuscripts of the Bible gloss the biblical text with textual variants introduced as "to hebraikon" or "to ioudaikon". The present paper examines such glosses in codices Parisinus graecus 3 and Ambrosianus A 147 inf. and tries to understand what actually "the Hebrew" and "the Jewish" were. The reference to "the Hebrew" in the patristic exegesis is explored, but the most promising path appears to be the comparison with Judeo-Greek biblical translations; “Hebrew” and “Jewish” glosses are compared with Judeo-Greek biblical glossaries and with the Greek version of the Constantinople Polyglott Pentateuch. The knowledge and employment of Jewish exegetical material testify for an interest in the Hebrew text of the Bible among Byzantine communities, one of which surely settled in Southern Italy.
