DescriptionThe present text is a translation into English of a slightly revised version of an article published in a peer-reviewed anthology, Michael v. Cotta-Schønberg, De Daniae regno aliqua non indigna cognitu : Danmarksbilledet hos en italiensk renæssancehumanist Æneas Silvius Piccolomini (Pius II). In: Renæssancen i svøb : dansk renæssance i europæisk belysning 1450-1550. Edited by Lars Bisgaard, Jacob Isager and Janus Møller Jensen. Odense, Syddansk Universitetsforlag, 2008, pp. 83-110. The two most important texts by Piccolomini on Danmark are discussed separately in another peer-reviewed anthology: Michael v. Cotta-Schønberg, To tekster af Æneas Silvius Piccolomini om Danmark. In: Umisteligt – Festskrift til Erland Kolding Nielsen. Red. af John T. Lauridsen og Olaf Olsen. Copenhagen, The Royal Library, 2007, pp. 55-74. It has been published in the h-prints repository in a slightly revised English edition as: Two Texts by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini on Denmark ; Et antal tekster af Æneas Silvius Piccolomini/Pius II (1405-1464) om Danmark præsenteres. ; A number of texts on Denmark written by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini/Pius II (1405-1464) are presented. An account is given of what Piccolomini will have known about Denmark and of his perception of Denmark as a peripheral state in the north of Europe and as a player in the European power game, as well as the relationship between Denmark and the Holy Roman Empire, and between Denmark and the Holy See. In particular, the position of King Christian I vis-à-vis the Crusade plans of the renaissance Popes -1464 is discussed.-
