Erzbischof Balduin I. von Hamburg-Bremen (1169–1178) – ein Pontifikat im Schatten des Löwen?

Abstract

Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit Erzbischof Balduin I. von Hamburg-Bremen (1169–1178). Von größerer Bekanntheit ist die Aussage Arnolds von Lübeck, dass es besser sei, von Balduin zu schweigen als zu sprechen, da dieser sein eigenes Bistum vernachlässigt habe. Die neuere und ältere Forschungsliteratur schließt sich diesem Urteil an und betont die Machtlosigkeit des Bischofs und seine totale Abhängigkeit von Herzog Heinrich dem Löwen. Es lohnt sich hingegen, die Quellenzeugnisse erneut kritisch zu sichten, um auf diese Weise zu überlegen, ob Balduin von Bremen wirklich ein Pontifikat im Schatten des Löwen führte.

This paper deals with archbishop Baldwin I. of Hamburg-Bremen (1169–1178), a rather unknown bishop of the 12th century. Although we’ve only got little information about his pontificate, a quite famous characterisation is given by Arnold of Lübeck. Arnold states it would be better to keep silent about his reign, because in his opinion Baldwin neglected his own church. Furthermore, contemporary scholars stress his dependence on Henry the Lion as one of his favourites and Henry’s all-powerful position in the diocese. But it seems to be worthy to reevaluate the existing sources dealing with Baldwin in order to give a source-based picture of the bishop and his pontificate at the end of the 12th century.
